A comprehensive change in driver's license renewal and health report rules has been proposed in Turkey to improve traffic safety. The draft under consideration is expected to significantly impact elderly drivers and those operating commercial vehicles.
The planned regulation aims to ensure more regular monitoring of drivers' health status and driving competence. Accordingly, renewal periods will be redefined based on age groups.
Three-Year Renewal Plan for Drivers Over 65
According to the draft, drivers over 65 would be required to submit a health report every three years when renewing their licenses. This measure is intended to increase health monitoring related to age.
For drivers over 80, even more frequent checks are being considered, potentially reducing the health report and renewal interval to as short as two years.
The regulation is designed to protect both the safety of elderly drivers themselves and other road users.
Age Limits and SRC Certification for Commercial Vehicles
The draft also addresses commercial vehicle drivers under the Road Transport Regulation. The minimum age requirement of 26 for large bus drivers is proposed to be maintained.
An upper age limit of 66 is planned for commercial vehicle drivers. This would reverse the temporary increase to 69, which was allowed under exceptional circumstances and logistical needs, returning to the standard limit.
Making the SRC professional competence certificate mandatory for commercial drivers is also on the agenda. This aims to establish clearer rules for documentation and age checks in commercial transport.
Relevant authorities are expected to provide detailed information about the draft, its official implementation date, and how the new rules will be applied in the coming days.
