Under a cooperation protocol signed between Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University and the Niğde Organized Industrial Zone (OSB), water treated at the OSB Advanced Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant will be reused in the university's green spaces and agricultural production.

The project aims to save approximately 60,000 cubic meters of water and provide an economic contribution of 1.5 million lira annually. University Rector Prof. Dr. Hasan Uslu stated that efficient water use has become a necessity and that water efficiency is one of the priority areas at the university.

Uslu explained that under the protocol, at least 25 percent of the water treated at the OSB will be used in agricultural areas, for lawn and tree irrigation, and for some coarse fodder. Noting that the area irrigated with reclaimed water has reached 235,865 square meters so far, Uslu said, "We will achieve significant savings by reusing 9,984 cubic meters of water monthly and 59,904 cubic meters annually. We are saving approximately 1.5 million lira per year in water management alone."

Rector Uslu stated that the increasing savings will be utilized in other areas of the university and that they aim to expand irrigation areas to increase the use of reclaimed water. He emphasized that the project will also contribute to compliance with Turkuaz certificate criteria, protection of drinking water resources, promotion of circular water management, and improvement of environmental performance in line with green OSB criteria.

Uslu said, "With this project, we are demonstrating that universities are not only institutions that teach education and science, but also institutions that set an example for society and develop solutions."
