Nvidia, one of the world's most valuable technology companies, reported $81.6 billion in revenue for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, surpassing Wall Street estimates. The increasing demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure led to an 85% year-over-year increase in the company's revenues and a 20% rise compared to the previous quarter. Net profit also rose more than threefold, from $18.8 billion to $58.3 billion. Nvidia's data center unit, powered by processors running AI systems, was the main driver of the quarter's performance. This unit's revenue reached $75.2 billion, showing a 92% increase compared to the same period last year. Although graphics processing units (GPUs) were initially designed for video games, Nvidia has transformed this technology into a fundamental component of artificial intelligence. The relentless demand for the company's AI hardware provides important clues about the future of the industry. Since February, Nvidia has invested $10 billion in Anthropic, signed a major deal with Meta, and aims for five gigawatts of AI facilities with CoreWeave by 2030. The company forecasted $91 billion in revenue for the current quarter, indicating accelerated growth. Regarding the Chinese market, Nvidia did not include data center revenues in these forecasts, citing geopolitical tensions between the US and China as a factor. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang stated he expects China to open its doors to high-tech US chips. However, Chinese tech firms have yet to purchase these products, and China is accelerating its own chip development efforts. These developments raise curiosity about how global AI competition and power balances in technology will shape up.
