The US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has set up a secret task force to increase pressure on the Cuban government and expand intelligence operations on the island. According to the New York Times, citing sources close to the matter, the task force will operate as part of President Donald Trump's efforts to bring about economic, political and leadership change in Havana.
The report stated that the task force would enable the allocation of more financial, human and technical resources to Cuba. It noted that field agents, intelligence analysts, cyber experts and personnel focused on covert influence operations have begun joining the team.
The task force's primary objective is to create divisions within Cuba's political elite, encouraging the replacement of officials seen as anti-American with figures more open to Trump's demands.
The CIA declined to comment on the matter.
