Former U.S. President Barack Obama, answering questions from writer and journalist Susan McKay in Belfast on Tuesday evening, made striking remarks about the Israeli government’s policies. “Israel is taking land from people, and it is going too far,” Obama said.
If Israel’s attitude is “We are now the strongest and most technologically advanced country in the region, and our security depends on doing whatever we need, taking whatever we want and making no concessions to anyone,” that may work in the short term, Obama said. “But when you adopt that stance, you have given up your moral foundation. I would say the current Israeli government has adopted that stance.”
“Neither Israelis nor Palestinians are going anywhere”

Noting that neither Israelis nor Palestinians are going anywhere, Obama asked Israelis how they want their children to live in the region. He stressed that not everyone in Israel supports Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and said a just way must be found to defend oneself while still acting ethically and morally.
Glasgow and Manchester next
The conversation was the first leg of a three-stop speaking program that also includes Glasgow and Manchester. Queen’s University Belfast awarded Obama an honorary doctorate the same day.
