The Oil Wrestling Presidential Cup will be held at Atatürk Airport Nation’s Garden in Istanbul on Saturday, September 26, after a 57-year hiatus. Eight başpehlivans and 84 wrestlers will compete in the event.
The purpose of the event
İbrahim Türkiş, president of the Türkiye Traditional Wrestling Federation, and Mehmet Akif Küçükdağ, director general of Real Estate Management at the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, attended a press conference in Istanbul.
Türkiş said the federation had been active for four years and had completed its institutionalization during that period. He said that when they took office in 2022, the oil wrestling season was not sufficiently active after the Historic Kırkpınar Wrestling Festival, adding that sports clubs had not shown the expected level of seriousness even though the season continued until the end of October.
Türkiş said they had established the Türkiye Oil Wrestling League to ensure a more regular season, noting that the league had been recognized as an institutional structure. He said oil wrestling enthusiasts had called for an organization without scoring, one that was more consistent with the traditional structure of oil wrestling, and announced that the Presidential Cup was being organized for this reason.
Open to spectators free of charge
Türkiş said the event would be held under the auspices of the Presidency. He thanked Bilal Erdoğan, president of the World Ethnosport Confederation, for his support and invited all oil wrestling enthusiasts to the event.

>Türkiş said the event could be watched free of charge and that the food and beverage needs of guests at the venue would also be met free of charge within the available means.
Shuttle services will operate to the venue
Küçükdağ said preparations had been completed to set up a 5,000-seat grandstand at Atatürk Airport Nation’s Garden. He said the venue had been made ready for use after approximately 15 days of preparations, adding that precautions had been taken against the possibility of rain and raincoats would be available.
Küçükdağ said food services would also be provided at the event venue and that special transport vehicles had been organized for visitors. He said shuttle services would transport spectators to and from the venue, adding that electric buses would be available for those wishing to tour the grounds.
