The Turkish State Meteorological Service has issued heavy rain warnings for 36 provinces for tomorrow, Sunday, Oct. 18. According to the list announced by Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Minister Murat Kurum, an orange alert was issued for Istanbul, Bursa, Kastamonu, Kocaeli, Sakarya, Sinop, Zonguldak, Bartın, Yalova and Düzce, and a yellow alert for 26 other provinces.
Heavy rain is expected in the provinces under the orange alert. Kurum asked citizens to be careful against floods, inundation and landslides. Saying the relevant institutions had taken the necessary precautions, he urged people to closely follow weather warnings.
Orange means “dangerous”

In the service’s four-level warning system, orange indicates that the weather is “dangerous” and the expected event may have unusual effects, with a likelihood of damage and losses. Yellow means the weather is “potentially dangerous.”
On the warning map, the orange provinces are concentrated along the Marmara region and the western Black Sea coast, while the yellow provinces stretch across a wide area from Central to Eastern Anatolia.
Storm warning for 28 provinces
The service also issued a yellow alert for strong winds and storms for 28 provinces, including Adana, Istanbul, Kayseri, Konya, Mersin, Samsun and Van. People were warned to be careful of roofs being blown off, falling trees and transport disruptions.
Istanbul’s Asian side was already on orange alert today
Many parts of Istanbul’s Asian side were also under an orange alert today, and the governor’s office said 50 to 100 kilograms of rain per square meter were expected in eight districts. Experts stress that recent rain has saturated the soil, raising the risk of floods and landslides.
Officials advise people to stay away from streambeds, underpasses and standing water during heavy rain, avoid unnecessary travel and follow announcements from official institutions.
