Cameron Stanley, Director of the Pentagon's Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office, claimed in a sworn statement submitted in a case at the U.S. Northern District of Mississippi Court that the artificial intelligence model developed by Elon Musk's company xAI plays an active role in U.S. national security and military operations.
Stanley stated that the Pentagon benefits from a system called the Grok Gov Model developed by xAI. He argued that this system is tailored to the needs of the U.S. government and possesses features not found in other AI models.
Military Applications Explained
In Stanley's statement, it was noted that the Grok model is integrated into the AI-supported command and data analysis platform Maven Smart System, developed by the Pentagon and Palantir.
This integration is reportedly used especially in target identification, intelligence activities, military planning processes, and logistics planning stages.
As an example of its use within the Department of Defense, Stanley mentioned that during the Operation Epic Wrath, the Maven platform targeted over 2,000 separate points with more than 2,000 munitions within 96 hours.
Previous Reports Linked to Iran Operations
A March report by The Washington Post also claimed that the Pentagon used Anthropic’s Claude model along with the Maven Smart System when planning attacks against Iran.
The report suggested that the Maven system identified potential targets in Iran with advanced AI technology and provided their precise locations.
The same report alleged that the system was used in the military operation to bring Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to the U.S. by force.
The statement included in the court file has reignited debate over the extent to which the U.S. uses AI tools in military and intelligence fields.
