In Adana, the potato harvest that began 20 days ago has seen the price per kilo at the farm drop from 30 lira to as low as 20 lira. It was noted that potato production increased this season in Çukurova, with the harvest continuing over approximately 79,000 decares of land.
The harvested potatoes are packed into crates or sacks depending on the shipping distance and loaded onto trucks. Products sent to nearby provinces are prepared in crates, while sacks are preferred for potatoes destined for distant regions.
Yield Brings Satisfaction to Producers
Cahit İncefikir, spokesperson for the Adana Agricultural Platform, stated that the harvest has been ongoing for 20 days and that yield varies by region based on discussions with producers. While some fields yield 2 tons per decare, others reach between 4 and 4.5 tons per decare.
İncefikir noted that seasonal conditions and heavy rainfall affected yields, leading to satisfaction in some areas and unmet expectations in others. Producers selling their potatoes at 20 lira per kilo and achieving sufficient yields expressed contentment.
Rainfall, Root Rot, and Replanting Costs
İncefikir also emphasized that potato production requires intensive labor. Many regions were affected by excessive rainfall, with root rot observed in some areas after planting, forcing some producers to replant.
He explained that replanting incurs additional costs and impacts the crop’s development. Crops that missed favorable weather conditions during the initial planting period showed delayed growth, which reflected negatively on yields.
Half of the Harvest Completed
Producer Fahrettin Ateş expressed satisfaction with the prices and said that half of the harvest period, expected to last 40 days, has been completed. Ateş mentioned that 20 days remain and that good prices this season have allowed them to make a profit.
Since they produce early-season potatoes, they do not have storage facilities. Ateş stated that the product is delivered directly from producer to producer. He noted that yield varies depending on planting time, with some fields experiencing declines due to rainfall, but overall he found the price outlook positive.
