Italian fashion giant Prada has made another significant move toward becoming the first major luxury brand to enter the space industry. On Sunday, the company introduced a special inner layer suit designed for NASA astronauts to wear on Moon missions. Created in collaboration with Houston-based space infrastructure developer Axiom Space, this body-hugging suit features ventilation tubes specially integrated into its fabric.
Speaking at an event held at Prada's Manhattan store, Marketing Director Lorenzo Bertelli emphasized the brand's ambitious position by stating, "We truly possess a broad range of expertise and knowledge" about the new "Liquid Cooling and Ventilation Garment."
Axiom Space CEO Jonathan Cirtain highlighted that their expertise in developing space exploration products can draw inspiration from many seemingly unrelated industries. SECOND MAJOR STEP IN SPACE FASHION This new product is not Prada's first venture into the space sector. The Italian brand made a big splash in 2024 by unveiling an outer space suit intended for use in NASA's Artemis 4 Moon landing.
Experts note that while luxury brands have long drawn inspiration from space travel, Prada is now moving beyond inspiration to form a genuine partnership. Thomai Serdari, a luxury brand strategist at New York University's Stern School of Business, explains that Prada's move is driven by two main motivations: direct access to ultra-wealthy consumers considering space travel and positioning the brand as avant-garde and visionary. Space tourism, gaining momentum through Jeff Bezos's Blue Origin and Elon Musk's SpaceX, is becoming a new market for luxury brands.
Luca Solca, global head of luxury goods at Bernstein, also notes that the resumption of manned Moon missions will attract significant global attention, and brands need this visibility to stay relevant. LUXURY SECTOR UNDER PRESSURE TURNS TO SPACE Prada's strategic move comes at a time when the global luxury consumption sector is experiencing a serious contraction.
After two years of economic downturn, the sector showed signs of recovery but was shaken again by the outbreak of war in Iran at the end of February. The conflict in the region disrupted global travel chains and negatively impacted luxury spending far beyond the Middle East. Companies aim to overcome this terrestrial contraction through space projects. WILL OTHER GIANTS FOLLOW PRADA?
Prada is not the only fashion brand interested in the space trend. Under Armour has partnered with spaceflight company Virgin Galactic, while Columbia Sportswear collaborated with Intuitive Machines on space fabric technology. However, other industry leaders like Louis Vuitton (LVMH), Hermès, and Chanel are not expected to directly imitate Prada. Prof. Thomai Serdari states that while being a trendsetter in the luxury sector is important, "you never see the upper echelon copying each other," suggesting that other major brands will likely create very different and original approaches to enter the space travel arena.
