The Presidency of Communications announced that it will hold a special panel in Ankara to mark the 955th anniversary of the Malazgirt Victory, regarded as one of the most important turning points in the history of Anatolia.
The Presidency of Communications said the “Panel on the Malazgirt Victory in Its 955th Year” will take place at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 27, 2026, at the Presidency of Communications Conference Hall.
Participants have also been offered the opportunity to register for the event. The Presidency of Communications has published a registration link on its official website for those wishing to attend the program.
955th anniversary events begin in Ahlat and Malazgirt
The panel in Ankara will be held immediately after comprehensive commemorative programs organized at various locations across Türkiye for the 955th anniversary of the Malazgirt Victory.
The celebrations in Ahlat began on Aug. 23 as part of commemorations for the Malazgirt Victory, won by the Great Seljuk army under the command of Sultan Alp Arslan against the Byzantine army on Aug. 26, 1071.
Programs held at the Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Ahlat National Garden feature traditional sports, mehter performances and various events reflecting Turkish culture.
Programs in Malazgirt are planned to take place between Aug. 24 and 26 at various locations, particularly the 1071 Malazgirt Battlefield Historical National Park.
President Erdoğan also expected to attend Ahlat program
- The 955th anniversary celebrations are being held this year with the participation of senior state officials.
Officials in Bitlis announced that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli, ministers and senior state officials will be hosted at the programs in Ahlat.
Ahlat Mayor Yavuz Gülmez also said that the Presidential Cabinet is planned to meet in Ahlat for the third time this year as part of the Malazgirt Victory events.
Malazgirt’s historical legacy to be examined from an academic perspective
The Malazgirt Victory, won by Great Seljuk Sultan Alp Arslan against the army of Byzantine Emperor Romanos Diogenes in 1071, is regarded as one of the pivotal events in Turkish and Anatolian history.
Because the victory rapidly strengthened the Turks’ political and military presence in Anatolia, Malazgirt is considered in historical scholarship one of the most important milestones in the process of Anatolia’s Turkification.
This year’s events aim to highlight not only the military aspect of the victory but also Malazgirt’s impact on Anatolia’s political, cultural and civilizational history.
New findings were also uncovered in 2026 during ongoing archaeological research at the Malazgirt battlefield. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism announced that ballista arrowheads linked to 11th-century Byzantine military technology had been unearthed for the first time. The findings provided new information about the period when Byzantine Emperor Romanos Diogenes besieged Malazgirt Castle.
