Şemsi Bayraktar, President of the Turkish Union of Agricultural Chambers, announced the changes in producer and market prices and input costs for May. According to the data, the gap between producer and shelf prices in the food market opened the most in apples.
In May, the price difference between producer and market reached 388.5% in apples. Apples, which were 18 lira 75 kuruş in the field, were sold at 91 lira 59 kuruş on market shelves, and their price increased approximately 4.9 times.
Carrot followed apples in price difference with 278.6%, zucchini with 215.3%, and hazelnut with 206.5%. It was notable that the price of hazelnuts, which was 410 lira at the producer, rose up to 1256 lira in the market.
Dry onion became the price increase champion
In May, dry onion was the product with the highest price increase both at the producer and in the market. The depletion of stocks in warehouses and the fact that the new harvest had not yet started accelerated the upward movement in onion prices.
On the market side, dry onion increased by 44.7%, while on the producer side it rose by 77.2%. Potatoes with 32.7% and lemons with 27.3% followed onions in the market.
Sharp declines were seen in vegetables
In field products whose yield increased with warming weather, declines stood out. The product with the biggest price drop in the market was green pepper with 54.3%.
The sharpest decline on the producer side was seen in tomatoes with 54.7%. This situation revealed that product-based volatility in vegetable prices increased as summer approached.
Input costs continued to rise
Şemsi Bayraktar also announced that prices of fertilizer, feed, electricity, and agricultural pesticides continued to rise in May. On the other hand, there was a slight monthly decrease in diesel prices.
The announced data brought back both the cost pressure on producers and the price difference consumers face in the market to the agenda. The situation seen especially in products like apples, hazelnuts, and onions made the imbalance in food prices visible once again.
