KVKK ruled that monitoring employees' clock-in and clock-out times through biometric data such as fingerprint, retina scan, face and hand geometry, and voice tone is unlawful. The decision draws an important boundary regarding biometric tracking methods used in workplaces. Accordingly, using such sensitive data for attendance control was deemed inappropriate. Biometric data is among the information that directly identifies a person and is considered under special protection. The board's assessment indicates that more measured methods should be preferred in employee monitoring. The decision may require employers to reconsider data protection rules in personnel tracking. Especially, the legal basis of systems used for entry-exit control will be evaluated more carefully within this framework.
