Russia's Ambassador to Tokyo, Nikolay Nozdrev, announced that Moscow is open to constructive dialogue with Japan based on mutual respect. Nozdrev said they want to preserve and strengthen not only economic cooperation but also cultural ties, humanitarian contacts, and practical-level relations.
The ambassador noted that economic cooperation between Russia and Japan has a natural foundation due to their geographical proximity. According to him, these contacts foster better understanding, mutual trust, and good neighborly relations between the two societies.
Economic and Social Contacts Take Center Stage
Nozdrev emphasized that Russia's fundamental approach in bilateral relations is to maintain stability in these areas. He conveyed the message that cultural ties and humanitarian exchanges should be kept separate from political tensions.
The Russian diplomat also acknowledged ongoing increasing problems in Russia-Japan relations. He said that protecting the legitimate rights of Russian citizens in Japan is one of Moscow's priority issues.
Relations Declined After Sanctions
Relations between Russia and Japan have sharply weakened since 2022 following a series of sanction packages Tokyo imposed on Moscow. Nozdrev previously stated that relations had fallen to their lowest point in history due to Japan's unfriendly policy.
According to the ambassador, Japan needs to move away from this stance for bilateral contacts and intergovernmental talks to resume. Moscow has sent the message that despite current tensions, it does not want to completely close economic and humanitarian channels.
