In an operation coordinated by the General Directorate of Coastal Safety, the 198-meter-long Saipem 7000 passed through the Dardanelles toward the Aegean Sea.
Because of the vessel's passage, maritime traffic in the Dardanelles was suspended in both directions from 07.00. Traffic returned to normal after the Saipem 7000 completed its passage through the strait.
Lowered to pass beneath the bridge
To pass beneath the bridge, the Saipem 7000 lowered itself by filling its tanks with seawater and tilted its crane towers. The platform's height, normally 135 meters, was reduced to approximately 57 meters during the passage.
The vessel was towed by the Pacific Discovery and GH Discovery tugboats. During the passage, it was accompanied by the Kurtarma-1, Kurtarma-13, Kurtarma-20 and Gemi Kurtaran tugboats operated by the General Directorate of Coastal Safety, the KIYEM-1 fast rescue boat and pilot captains.
Capable of laying pipelines in deep waters
The Saipem 7000 previously operated in the Black Sea as part of the Blue Stream Project, which transported natural gas from Russia to Türkiye. The vessel set a record in this field by laying a pipeline at a depth of approximately 2,150 meters.
Capable of laying pipelines in waters deeper than 2,000 meters, the vessel can accommodate up to 725 personnel and continues to carry out international maritime operations.
