Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor Gürlek announced that two separate operations had been launched against illegal betting, drug trafficking and organized criminal groups.
Illegal betting operation
An investigation coordinated by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office’s Bureau for Illegal Betting and Sports Investigations targeted individuals who promoted illegal betting by sending mass messages to citizens’ mobile phones. Illegal betting advertisements sent particularly through numbers beginning with 0850 were identified using artificial intelligence-supported analysis systems and advanced algorithms developed by the Istanbul Police Department’s Cybercrime Division.
An Istanbul-based operation was launched to apprehend 33 suspects as part of the investigation.
Drug operation
In the other investigation, conducted by the Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, a large quantity of drugs was seized from a container aboard a Chinese-flagged vessel that had docked at Ambarlı Port, following a joint operation by the Istanbul Provincial Gendarmerie Command and the Istanbul Customs Enforcement and Intelligence Directorate.
The container, which was determined to have arrived from a country in South Asia, contained 3 tonnes of pregabalin, a substance used in the production of green-prescription medicines and posing a serious threat when misused. The substance’s market value was estimated at approximately 2.1 billion lira.
A controlled delivery and technical surveillance operation was carried out to reach the intended recipients of the drugs. The truck used in the incident was taken into custody, while three suspects were detained and their digital materials were seized. Efforts to fully expose the criminal network are continuing.
Gürlek thanked the prosecutors’ offices and security units conducting the operations, saying, “We will not tolerate any criminal organization targeting our young people and citizens. We will continue to pursue criminal proceeds and criminal organizations resolutely within the framework of the principles of the rule of law.”
