Eda Savcıgil, a high school student who started swimming at age 8, achieved a historic success at the Maratona del Golfo Capri-Napoli race held in Italy. She became the first Turkish athlete to complete the 28-kilometer stage of the race, held on June 13, in 9 hours, finishing the course solo.
The young athlete battled challenging weather and sea conditions during the race. Eda Savcıgil described the difficulties she faced as follows:
We started the race well, but the sea was not on our side. With currents, waves, and wind, it was almost like a storm toward the end. I encountered all sorts of setbacks during the race. I vomited, my shoulder hurt. Then I pulled myself together and quickly continued. Despite my shoulder pain and injury, I did not give up; I kept going.
Despite all the adversities, Eda Savcıgil finished the race as the overall champion in the men's and women's general classification. She noted that some competitors dropped out due to sea conditions, while others were caught by the time limit.
New target: 36 kilometers and the Oceans Seven
Expressing her pride in both finishing as champion and being the first Turkish athlete to complete the course, Eda Savcıgil also announced her new goals. The young swimmer aims to become the fastest Turkish athlete by completing the 36-kilometer course of the Capri-Napoli race and also wants to complete the Oceans Seven, a series of seven open-water channels around the world.
Eda Savcıgil said, "Among my future goals is to become the fastest and youngest Turkish athlete to complete the courses known as the Oceans Seven."
Due to the injury she sustained during the race, Eda Savcıgil has not yet been able to start training at full capacity. She had previously placed third in the 100-meter breaststroke at the Winter Swimming World Championship organized by the International Winter Swimming Association in March.
