Spain’s Foreign Ministry condemned US sanctions targeting officials of the International Criminal Court (ICC). The ministry said the sanctions also target the court’s president and a senior legal official in the Office of the Prosecutor.
In a written statement, the ministry described the sanctions as “an outright attack” on the ICC’s independence, integrity and impartiality. The statement stressed that the court’s jurisdiction derives from the mandate granted by states parties to the Rome Statute.
Spain backs the ICC
Spain’s Foreign Ministry said the ICC plays an indispensable role in ensuring accountability for the most serious crimes, protecting victims and contributing to addressing the harm they have suffered.
The ministry also said Spain stood in full solidarity with the ICC’s judges, prosecutors and all personnel affected by the sanctions.
The statement said Spain would continue to fully meet its commitments under the Rome Statute and international law and support the exercise of the ICC’s jurisdiction.
