Oscar-winning American actress Susan Sarandon attended a protest in New York ahead of Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s speech to the United Nations General Assembly.
At the demonstration near the United Nations headquarters, protesters expressed opposition to Israel’s military operations in Gaza and Netanyahu’s speech at the UN.
Sarandon was among those detained by the New York Police Department at the demonstration. The footage showed officers handcuffing Sarandon’s hands behind her back and escorting the actress away from the protest area.

Jewish Voice for Peace, which organized the protest, said demonstrators wore white T-shirts bearing the slogans “Fund People Not Bombs,” “No War” and “Free Palestine.”
Police said the demonstrators had blocked an intersection and that some protesters continued to remain in the area despite warnings to disperse. Detentions followed.
In addition to Sarandon, actress Hannah Einbinder, New York City Council member Chi Ossé and congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier were also among those detained.

During Netanyahu’s speech to the UN General Assembly, representatives from dozens of countries left the chamber in a separate protest.
