Suspicious sabotage incidents believed to target the German navy have been increasing since early 2025. According to official and judicial authorities' assessments, a total of ten possible sabotage cases have been uncovered since the beginning of the year. The most recent suspicious incident was seen at the end of February 2026 in Wilhelmshaven. A cut of about two centimeters was noticed on the fuel line of the frigate named Rheinland-Pfalz. The German military assessed that the damage could be intentional. The incident was reported to the investigation authorities in March, but the prosecutor's office in Oldenburg later closed the case. Authorities could not determine whether the damage was caused by deliberate intervention, wear and tear, or material defect. Another suspicious case occurred in January 2025 at the Blohm+Voss shipyard in the port of Hamburg. In the engine room of the Emden warship, a coarse-grained substance used for cleaning ship surfaces was found, which was considered capable of causing serious damage. The Hamburg criminal police and prosecutor's office reported that sabotage was the leading possibility in this incident. A 37-year-old Romanian and a 54-year-old Greek, believed to be connected to the incident, were detained. However, the prosecutor's office did not disclose the names of possible instigators. Previously, in some suspicious cases, cable bundles were cut, and in another incident, used oil was poured into a ship's drinking water system. In some of these files, the prosecutor's offices have closed the proceedings. According to Western security circles, the possibility that Russia is behind these incidents is also being considered. It is reported that Germany is seen as one of the main targets due to its support for Ukraine, and German security agencies have increased their warnings against sabotage carried out by low-profile individuals directed via social media.
