Ukrainian Chief of General Staff Oleksandr Syrskyi announced that since the beginning of the year, the Ukrainian army has reclaimed more than 600 square kilometers from Russian forces. Syrskyi described the situation on the front in May as complex and dynamic.
The Chief of General Staff stated that Russian troops continue their attempts to advance in eastern and southern Ukraine, with a significant increase in the number of clashes. The heaviest fighting occurred around Pokrovsk, Oleksandrivka, and Huliaipole.
Balance of losses and gains in May
Syrskyi said that as a result of active operations, the net area regained in May was about 100 square kilometers in favor of Ukraine. According to him, Ukrainian forces continue to maintain the initiative in some regions.
The commander also reported that thousands of successful attacks were carried out on Russian military targets throughout May. Unmanned systems struck more than 88,000 targets, and assessments indicate that over 30,500 Russian soldiers were neutralized.
Deep strikes and targets around Moscow
Syrskyi revealed that Deep Strike systems hit 111 targets in military-industrial, energy, and fuel supply infrastructure for the Russian army during the month. He shared an estimate that these operations caused direct and indirect economic losses to Russia of approximately 1.058 billion dollars.
The Chief of General Staff said that, for the first time under a unified plan, a series of successful attacks targeted military-industrial and fuel-energy facilities in Moscow and the Moscow region. According to this statement, these strikes demonstrated that the Ukrainian army can inflict losses far behind the front lines.
Air defense and maritime routes
Syrskyi noted that air defense units destroyed more than 59,000 aerial targets in May and repelled 25 Russian missile and air attacks. He emphasized Ukraine’s ongoing need for modern air defense systems and their associated missiles.
The naval forces conducted approximately 1,500 operations during May to ensure the safety of civilian shipping in the combat zone, enabling 633 vessels to pass through the major ports of Odesa and along the Danube River route.
Preparation, fortification, and discipline
Syrskyi reported that during a command meeting, briefings were held on restoring combat readiness, engineering and fortification work, logistical support, and maintaining order and discipline within the army. At the end of the meeting, he assigned tasks to all army units for the upcoming period.
The Chief of General Staff had previously stated that Russian forces have increased their strength around Oleksandrivka, Huliaipole, and Orikhiv, reinforcing the message that pressure on the eastern and southern front lines continues.
