Turkish Basketball Federation (TBF) President Hidayet Türkoğlu, in a statement to an AA correspondent, expressed satisfaction with the current state of Turkish basketball and noted that investments in youth development are beginning to bear fruit.
Türkoğlu referred to the FIBA U17 World Cup hosted this summer by the Turkcell Basketball Development Center, highlighting the organizational success and the broken attendance records. "We are one of the federations that best organize such events," Türkoğlu said, thanking basketball fans for their interest.
Expressing excitement about the performance of young players, the TBF President said, "A very high-quality generation is emerging that will wear the senior national team jersey in the future. Their development and reaching these levels are very valuable to us. As a federation, we always show that we trust them and stand by them."
Goal: 2027 World Cup
Assessing the success of the senior men's national team, which completed the first round of the FIBA 2027 World Cup European Qualifiers undefeated, Türkoğlu said it was a continuation of the 2025 European runner-up finish. "Our current goal is to qualify for the 2027 World Cup in Qatar," Türkoğlu said, stressing that they want to march confidently toward the target by also winning the second-round games.
Pointing to the players' dedication, Türkoğlu said, "All our friends playing in the NBA, the EuroLeague, and the Turkish League want to be part of this team as soon as their leagues end. I believe we will be on the court with a full squad in August as well."
Call for support for women's national team
Hidayet Türkoğlu also called on basketball fans for the FIBA 2026 Women's World Cup to be held in Germany in September. Noting the importance of the senior women's national team reaching the quarterfinals last year and earning the right to participate in the World Cup, Türkoğlu said, "Hopefully, both our men's and women's senior national teams will represent our country in the best possible way."
Clubs and the NBA Europe project
Also touching on the successes of Turkish teams in European basketball, the TBF President said, "Until now, our clubs have been the ones that best represented our country in European basketball." He added that it is very meaningful for them that a Turkish team will take part in the NBA Europe project planned to be launched next year.
Providing information about the innovations at the Turkcell Basketball Development Center, Türkoğlu thanked President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for bringing the facility to Turkish sports. Noting that a museum will also be launched toward the end of the year, Türkoğlu said, "Administratively, we always try to do our best to create lasting works."
