Pilot production has started at the TENMAK BOREN Lithium Borate Salts Production Plant, which was established under the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources' efforts to produce lithium borate compounds domestically.
Turkey needs between 8.5 and 10 tonnes of lithium borate compounds annually, particularly for use in the cement and glass industries. A significant portion of this demand was previously met through imports.
The plant has an annual capacity of 5 tonnes
The plant was established as part of the localization efforts led by the Turkish Energy, Nuclear and Mining Research Institute (TENMAK). Its assembly, commissioning and performance tests have been completed, and acceptance testing has begun.
Lithium tetraborate and lithium metaborate compounds were produced on a pilot scale during the performance tests. The plant is planned to produce a total of 5 tonnes of lithium borate compounds annually.
Imports are expected to decrease
The production capacity is expected to meet a significant portion of Turkey's demand for lithium borate compounds and reduce imports in this field. The plant is projected to contribute approximately $5 million to the economy each year.
Producing high-value-added and strategically important products domestically is expected to help reduce dependence on imports and strengthen Turkey's production capacity in the international lithium borate market.
