The Afife ballet returns to AKM after 28 years
Staged by the Istanbul State Opera and Ballet, the work portrays Afife Jale’s life and artistic struggle through the language of dance. Featuring notable music and choreography, the production can be seen at the AKM Türk Telekom Opera Hall on October 14, 15, 17 and 29.
The "Afife" ballet, staged by the Istanbul State Opera and Ballet, met audiences again with a new production after 28 years. The work tells the story, through the universal language of dance, of Afife Jale, the first actress to take the stage in 1919 despite all obstacles, when Muslim Turkish women were prohibited from appearing on stage.
First staged in 1998 by the Ankara State Opera and Ballet at the Atatürk Cultural Center, the work has returned before audiences in a new production by the Istanbul State Opera and Ballet.
Four periods from Afife Jale’s life
With music by Turgay Erdener and a libretto and choreography by Beyhan Murphy, the ballet portrays the final period of Afife Jale’s life, which she spent at the Bakırköy Psychiatric Hospital, through a dramatic narrative. The production also depicts Afife, under the supervision of hospital attendants, recalling four distinct periods from her past and dying in the arms of her first love, Ziya.
Four stages representing turning points in the artist’s life are brought to the stage through dancers symbolized by different colors. İlke Kodal portrays Afife, the main character, while Berin Günay performs as Golden Afife, Gizem Atik Tuncay as Red Afife, Deniz Kılınç Tunçeli as Purple Afife and Berfu Elmas as Silver Afife.
Berkay Günay portrays Ziya, Afife Jale’s cousin and first love who left a lasting mark on her life; Batur Büklü plays her husband, Selahattin Pınar; and Zuhal Karaca portrays Elisa Binemeciyen, an actress of the period. The characters known as the "Three Shadows," who are hospital attendants, are performed by Emre Karaca, Ahmet Şahin and Taner Güngör.
