The Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival, hosted by Antalya Metropolitan Municipality, continues with film screenings and talks. The world premiere of "The Sting of a Dead Bee" was held as part of the festival.
A talk was held after the screening at the Aspendos Hall of the Atatürk Cultural Center, with the film’s director and screenwriter Aydın Orak and actors Cansel Elçin and Zeynep Tuğçe Bayat taking part.
Conscience and contradictions shape the film’s starting point
Aydın Orak said the starting point for the film was a situation similar to its subject that he experienced two and a half months after becoming a father. Saying that fortunately the situation in question did not occur, Orak explained that he built the world of the film around the question, "But what if it had?"
Orak said the film examines how people confront a mistake they have made, their conscience and their sense of justice, adding that the main story centers on a person’s struggle with their own conscience. He said he wanted to portray a person marked by contradictions.
Cansel Elçin: It was a deeply painful drama
Cansel Elçin said he and his wife and co-star Zeynep Tuğçe Bayat spoke extensively about the film during production and that those discussions were reflected in the filming.
Elçin said the film was a deeply painful drama told from a man’s perspective, adding that it also explores existence through its female character. He explained that he initially did not want to take the role in the story Bayat sent him, as the film involved a profound tragedy and they also had a son, which made the project psychologically difficult for him.
Although the filming was difficult, Elçin said the process moved forward simply and without problems, adding that it was necessary to confront the challenging aspects of the characters to achieve good results.
Zeynep Tuğçe Bayat discusses preparing for her role
Zeynep Tuğçe Bayat said it was not necessary to be a killer to play one or a mother to play a mother. Saying that she enjoys doing preparatory work and studying scripts in detail, Bayat explained that she took on this role without preparation.
Bayat said her son was six months old during filming and that the milk used in the film was hers. Saying that she was the one who wanted her husband, Cansel Elçin, to act alongside her in the film, Bayat added that sharing the role with her husband made the process much easier for her.
The film’s plot
"The Sting of a Dead Bee" tells the story of Yusuf, a lawyer who accidentally causes the death of his two-month-old baby and is consumed by severe remorse. Believing that he has committed an unforgivable crime, Yusuf is drawn into a profound sense of guilt.
Yusuf’s wife Ayşe, meanwhile, becomes increasingly isolated in silent grief and deep depression. Through the metaphor of the "sting of a dead bee," the film explores the invisible wounds left by loss and focuses on guilt, grief, family ties and the search for redemption.
In addition to Cansel Elçin and Zeynep Tuğçe Bayat, the film features Nilüfer Açıkalın, Tim Seyfi and Pelin Batu.
