The “The Best Part of the Story: Abstract Painting in Türkiye” exhibition presents a special selection of abstract paintings produced in Türkiye between 1950 and 1970. The exhibition features 74 works by 29 artists.
The exhibition focuses on 1950-1970
Elif Özgen, director of Küra Collective, which operates in the fields of curatorship and art projects, said major artistic transformations took place in Türkiye and around the world after the Second World War.
Özgen said changes in academia during the 1950-1970 period, interaction between students returning from abroad and artists who received their art education outside the academy created a productive environment for abstract painting.
The exhibition includes abstract works by Ferruh Başağa, Nuri İyem, Füsun Onur and Nil Yalter that have not been displayed for a long time, as well as works by artists who produced art in this field throughout their lives.
The poetry of abstract painting takes center stage
Özgen said the phrase “The Best Part of the Story” in the exhibition’s title points to the aspect of abstract painting that became free from earlier debates over the prohibition of figuration, perspective and imitation.
Özgen explained that rather than representing a subject or object, the artists reflected their inner worlds on the canvas through color, line, mark and geometry, adding that most of the works in the exhibition make visible what is unseen in the artists’ inner worlds.
Özgen said abstract art can take viewers into a different experience through stain-based or geometric forms of expression, like a wordless poem.
Özgen said the U+K Art Collection focuses on the untold aspects of contemporary and abstract painting in Türkiye, adding that the collection was created to make visible overlooked moments of change, artists and works in the course of contemporary painting in Türkiye.
New exhibitions and publications are planned
In the coming period, Küra Collective plans to organize group and solo exhibitions featuring works by living artists, alongside exhibitions from the collection.
The collective, which aims especially to introduce young artists’ work to viewers, will hold a 15-day event with a different concept on December 15. Details of the event are planned to be shared in November.
The collective is also continuing its work in design and publishing. The exhibition catalogue is being prepared as its first publication, while further publications are planned for the coming period.
The “The Best Part of the Story: Abstract Painting in Türkiye” exhibition will be open to visitors until December 12.
