A 72-member search and rescue team made up of Turkish Airlines (THY) personnel was readied for duty at a launch and insignia handover ceremony.
Speaking at the ceremony, which was also attended by Istanbul Governor Davut Gül, THY Chairman of the Board and Executive Committee Prof. Dr. Murat Şeker said the team was a first in the global aviation industry.
Applications from 1,210 volunteers assessed
According to Şeker, the process began with applications from 1,210 volunteers working at THY. The employees completed theoretical and practical field training as well as challenging drills, and successfully passed AFAD accreditation exams.
The search and rescue team consists of personnel from various areas of the company, including the cockpit, cabin, ground services and medical units. Team members completed the preparation process by making sacrifices in their demanding work schedules, family lives and personal time.
Thanks extended to AFAD
Şeker thanked Istanbul Governor Davut Gül and Ali Hamza Pehlivan, president of the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority, who attended the ceremony. He also expressed his gratitude to the THY employees who contributed to the project and to AFAD for its support.
Şeker expressed his hope that the team would not be needed for an actual mission and that its work would remain limited to drills, and wished the search and rescue personnel success.
