A tornado in Antalya's Kepez district destroyed two containers where workers were staying at a construction site in the Fevzi Çakmak neighborhood. Five workers inside the containers were thrown about. Two of the workers died at the scene, while two others died after being taken to hospital. The injured worker was in good condition.
Heavy rain affected many parts of Antalya overnight after the Turkish State Meteorological Service issued a yellow-coded heavy rain warning for the city. The moment the tornado formed in Kepez was captured on a local resident's cellphone camera.
Governor Şahin: "A very unusual natural event"
Antalya Governor Hulusi Şahin, who inspected the scene, said, "We are facing a very unusual natural event. No storm or tornado was reported anywhere else in the city. There is no damage to the surrounding buildings. It completely destroyed two containers only in this area."
Governor Şahin expressed his condolences to the families of the workers who died and wished the injured worker a speedy recovery. Şahin said teams were investigating whether there were any other injured people or fatalities at the site.
Construction site's tower crane also toppled
The tornado also toppled a tower crane at the same construction site. Governor Şahin said no one was killed or injured when the crane fell, adding that the workers died when the containers were destroyed. Emergency medical teams, police and firefighters were dispatched to the area after the report.
Footage taken at the construction site in the morning showed the wreckage of the destroyed containers and the toppled crane. The roof of a building in the area was also damaged.

Heavy rain affects the city
Some roads across the city were flooded because of the heavy rain, making it difficult for drivers to proceed.
Footage recorded at different points across the city showed heavy rain and wind sending trees swaying.
The identities of the workers who died have not yet been released. The investigation at the site is ongoing.
