In a written statement from the National Unity Party (UBP), Üstel called on UN Secretary-General Guterres, who is set to visit the TRNC and the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus, and said that a new process in Cyprus can only begin if the political realities on the island are accepted.
Üstel noted that UN Secretary-General Guterres will also come to the TRNC and expressed his hope that the visit would lead to sincere questioning of the injustices the Turkish Cypriot people have been subjected to for years.
'SYSTEMATIC ECONOMIC ATTACKS AGAINST THE TRNC HAVE INCREASED'
Pointing out that the promises made to the Turkish Cypriot people, who sought a solution during the Annan Plan referendum in 2004 and the subsequent process, were not kept, that the isolation has worsened and that systematic economic attacks on the TRNC have increased, TRNC Prime Minister Üstel stressed that the primary responsibility for this situation lies with the European Union and the UN, which broke their promises.
'THE REALITY ON THE ISLAND IS CLEAR'
Üstel said the UN must now abandon the federation concept that has produced no result for over 60 years and added: 'The reality on the island is clear. There are two peoples, two democracies and two separate states in Cyprus.'
CALL FOR UN TO 'RECOGNIZE THE TRNC'
In his statement, Üstel underlined that a lasting agreement in Cyprus is only possible if the realities are accepted and said: 'Mr. Guterres, if you want to make history by finding a solution to the Cyprus problem, this is what needs to be done: The United Nations (UN) General Assembly should convene and recognize the TRNC. The path to a lasting agreement and a permanent solution lies through here.'
