U.S. President Donald Trump shared a map image on his social media account showing the Strait of Hormuz as U.S. territory. The strategic waterway was labeled “New U.S. territory” in the image.
Trump’s post brought renewed attention to his earlier remarks that he could declare the Strait of Hormuz U.S. territory. At an event he attended on August 14, Trump claimed that the U.S. Navy was imposing a full blockade on the strait.
After completely defeating Iran, which is being very heavily defeated, I will declare the Strait of Hormuz U.S. territory shortly.
In a separate social media post, Trump said that the United States had “full control” over the Strait of Hormuz and believed Washington could maintain that control.
Iran sets conditions for reopening
Iranian officials said the Strait of Hormuz would not reopen unless the United States ended its intervention and naval blockade. The government in Tehran also demanded that the terms of the agreement signed with Washington on June 17 be fulfilled.
