The European Commission called on Israel to comply with its obligations under international law. The statement followed remarks by far-right Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir defending the killing of dozens of Palestinians in Gaza every night.
Speaking at the European Commission’s press conference in Brussels on Tuesday, Commission spokesperson Anitta Hipper said Israel was expected to comply with all its obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law.

Hipper stressed that the protection of civilians must be guaranteed at all times.
Ben-Gvir recently called for an increase in airstrikes on the Gaza Strip and for the killing of 30 to 40 Palestinians a day. He also reiterated his call for Israelis to be resettled in Gaza at the expense of the territory’s indigenous population.
The Commission spokesperson also said that a proposal to place Ben-Gvir on the sanctions list under the global human rights sanctions regime was on the Council’s agenda.
