The Turkish Naval Forces and Somali National Armed Forces rescued the MV LATUF cargo ship, which pirates had seized off the Somali coast, in a joint operation.
The operation began after the ship was seized on August 17 off Cifley, near the town of Eyl in the Nugaal region of northeastern Somalia, and lasted 10 days.
The ship resumes safe navigation
During the operation, four boats used by the pirates were destroyed and 14 pirates were killed. The other pirates abandoned the ship under pressure from the security forces.
The security forces fully regained control of the MV LATUF. The ship resumed safe navigation.
Somalia-Türkiye defense cooperation
The operation was conducted under the defense cooperation agreement between Somalia and Türkiye. The agreement aims to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in protecting Somalia’s coastline, ensuring maritime security and combating piracy.
The framework agreement on defense and economic cooperation, signed in February 2024, also covers the development of Somalia’s maritime security capacity. Under the agreement, Türkiye provides support in protecting Somalia’s maritime jurisdiction, securing its marine resources and combating illegal activities.
Somali authorities warn of accountability
The Somali Ministry of Defense said piracy is a serious crime that warrants severe penalties, and announced that those involved in such activities, their accomplices, and those who support or ignore these acts will be brought to justice.
The ministry thanked the Somali National Armed Forces and the Turkish Naval Forces for their cooperation during the operation and reiterated Somalia’s determination to protect its coastline and territorial waters, combat piracy and ensure the safety of maritime transport.
