A ceremony commemorating the 104th anniversary of Victory Day on Aug. 30 and Turkish Armed Forces Day was held at the Turkish Martyrs' Memorial in Baku.
Türkiye's Ambassador to Baku, Birol Akgün, representatives of Turkish institutions and organizations operating in Azerbaijan, embassy and military attaché office staff, businesspeople and citizens attended the ceremony.
Wreath laid at the memorial
The ceremony began with a moment of silence, after which Akgün laid a wreath at the Turkish Martyrs' Memorial. A military band affiliated with Azerbaijan's Ministry of Defense performed the national anthems of Azerbaijan and Türkiye.
Akgün then signed the memorial book. In his message, he commemorated the heroes who lost their lives and the veterans of Türkiye's War of Independence, foremost among them Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Türkiye, and his comrades-in-arms.
Soldiers who died in Baku commemorated
Akgün said the Battle of Manzikert, which opened the gates of Anatolia, the Great Offensive that began on Aug. 26, and the victory of Aug. 30, 1922, showed the world that Anatolia would remain a Turkish homeland.
Akgün said that the victory of the Caucasian Islamic Army in Baku had been added to a chain of victories stretching from Mete Han to Sultan Alparslan, and from Mehmed the Conqueror to Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. He also commemorated the soldiers of the Caucasian Islamic Army who lost their lives in Baku.
Akgün noted that the soldiers who lost their lives for Azerbaijan's independence and the protection of its territory made a major contribution to the development of the understanding of “two states, one nation” between Türkiye and Azerbaijan and to strengthening their brotherhood.
Akgün said that the heroism displayed during the liberation of Karabakh from occupation was also inspired by the courage of the soldiers who lost their lives for the liberation of Baku, adding that the martyrs would live forever in the people's hearts.
Emphasis on deepening relations
Akgün said that relations between Türkiye and Azerbaijan had been elevated to the level of an alliance thanks to the determination and resilience inherited from the martyrs, and added that they would continue working to deepen relations further.
At the end of his message, Akgün commemorated all the martyrs who lost their lives for the independence, national sovereignty, homeland and flag of Türkiye and Azerbaijan, saying that they bowed respectfully before their memory.
Following the ceremony, participants laid carnations at the symbolic graves of the martyrs and visited Martyrs' Avenue.
