Students from the Turkish minority in Xanthi, northeastern Greece, boycotted classes on Monday, saying their demands concerning education conditions had not been met.
The students gathered outside the middle and high school building in the morning. They did not enter their classrooms until the third period and handed a written statement outlining their demands to the school administration.
They called for the second building to be reopened
The students said taking the school’s second building out of use had caused overcrowding. They said the number of students in some classrooms had risen to as many as 30 and called for the second building to be reopened and class sizes to be reduced.
The students also criticized the school administration’s stance during the discussions. They called for the school board of trustees and the parents’ association to be adequately informed about developments, and demanded the removal of the requirement to obtain written permission from the school administration to use the restroom during lessons.
