Türkiye’s Embassy in Cairo hosted the Climate Bridge seminar ahead of the Conference of the Parties on Climate Change, COP31, planned to take place in Antalya in November. Approximately 130 people attended the event, organized in cooperation with Youth Loves Egypt, a youth civil society organization working in the environmental field.
Representatives of government institutions, parliament, civil society, youth, academia, the media and the private sector, as well as members of diplomatic missions, attended the seminar. Türkiye’s Ambassador to Cairo Salih Mutlu Şen delivered the opening remarks.
Australia’s Ambassador to Cairo Joel MacGregor and Ahmed Fathy, founder and president of Youth Loves Egypt, also addressed the program. Şen said climate change was an issue requiring shared responsibility and global cooperation, emphasizing the importance of young people’s participation in the preparation and implementation of climate policies.
Şen also outlined Türkiye’s priorities during its COP31 presidency. He said preparations for the summit, conducted in close cooperation with Australia, were based on three key elements: dialogue, consensus and action.
Şen said climate goals should not be limited to setting new targets at meetings, adding that the will to turn existing targets into reality in fields, industry and cities must be demonstrated. He said they aimed for COP31 to go down in history as a Conference of the Parties focused on implementation.
The program included a presentation on the priorities of Türkiye’s COP31 presidency, as well as the introduction of the Arab Youth Declaration, prepared in coordination with the organization. The session titled “The Road to COP31” addressed climate policies, sustainability and the process leading up to the summit.
The session was attended by former Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Mohamed Abdelaty, Mahmoud Fathallah, director of the Arab League’s Department of Environment and Meteorology, Karim Morsi, former adviser to Egypt’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, and Dalia Abdelkader, head of the Sustainability Unit at Commercial International Bank.
The event also featured a photo exhibition titled “One Migration Route, Two Shores.” The exhibition explored the journeys of migratory birds along a route stretching from the Bosphorus in Istanbul to the shores of the Red Sea.
