The International Asian Seed Congress will be held in Türkiye for the first time. Organized by the Asia and Pacific Seed Association in cooperation with TÜRKTOB and the Turkish Seed Industry Association, the congress will take place under the auspices of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in Antalya from December 1 to 5.
Yıldırım said the congress was important for Türkiye and the Asia-Pacific countries. Asia-Pacific countries account for 30% of the global seed market, which is worth approximately $70 billion.
Türkiye aims to become a seed hub
Yıldırım said Türkiye’s location at the crossroads of Central Asia, Europe, Asia and North Africa provided an advantage for the seed industry. Yıldırım said the congress would help Türkiye become not only a transit point for seeds but also a seed hub.
Türkiye’s seed export-to-import coverage ratio rose from 108% in 2018 to 141%. Yıldırım said the congress would accelerate the development of the seed industry and increase its capacity to generate added value.
Seed exports to 117 countries
Yıldırım said Türkiye ranked 10th in the world in the seed industry and that the goal was to move the country into the top five. Türkiye exports seeds to 117 countries, while the number of countries to which it exports rises above 130 when ornamental plants, seedlings and saplings are included.
