The second week of group-stage action at the 2026 FIFA World Cup is behind us, and the teams reaching the last 32 are beginning to take shape. As of Wednesday, seven teams have secured a place in the next round, while five have been knocked out of the tournament.
Among those advancing are co-hosts Mexico and the United States, along with defending champions Argentina, finalists France, Germany, Norway and Colombia. These sides gathered enough points ahead of the final group-stage matches to book their spots in the next phase.
Teams bowing out of the tournament
Five teams that finished the first two group matches without a point, or failed to collect enough points, have made an early exit from the tournament. The eliminated sides include two Arab nations, Tunisia and Jordan, as well as Türkiye, Haiti and Panama.
In the tournament, the best eight teams from among the 12 third-placed group finishers will also advance to the last 32. For that reason, the fate of many sides will be decided after the final round of group-stage matches on Sunday. With goal difference expected to be decisive, the drama for the teams sitting in third place will last until the final whistle.
