Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Öncü Keçeli said Greece’s new renewable energy spatial plan covering the Aegean Sea would have no legal consequences for Türkiye regarding the interconnected disputes between the two countries.
Keçeli said the plan, like similar Greek initiatives, would not affect Türkiye’s legal position. He added that Türkiye’s position regarding geographical formations whose sovereignty was not transferred to Greece under international agreements would also remain unchanged.
It will not affect Türkiye’s legal position in the Aegean
Keçeli said Türkiye’s legal position on Aegean issues had been emphasized on various previous occasions, adding that this initiative and similar ones would not affect that position.
Keçeli said unilateral actions should be avoided in enclosed or semi-enclosed seas such as the Aegean and the Mediterranean. He added that international maritime law encourages cooperation among coastal countries in such waters.
Emphasis on the Athens Declaration
Keçeli said Türkiye, one of the two coastal countries of the Aegean Sea, was ready to cooperate with Greece.
He said Türkiye maintained its position that disputes should be resolved through a sincere and comprehensive approach based on international law, equity and good-neighborly relations, within the framework of the “Athens Declaration on Friendly Relations and Good-Neighbourliness” dated December 7, 2023.
