U.S.-based ride-hailing company Uber and Chinese autonomous driving firm Pony.ai have expanded their partnership, targeting the launch of more than 2,000 robotaxis in Europe.
The collaboration will expand from the existing commercial service in Zagreb, Croatia, to four additional European cities. The companies did not disclose which cities would be added or provide a detailed timeline for the rollout.
The Middle East is also included in the plans
The expanded agreement also includes plans to launch robotaxi services in the Middle East. Details of the rollout in the region are expected to be announced gradually.
Under the agreement, Pony.ai will provide its Level 4 autonomous driving technology, passenger experience systems and operational expertise developed through large-scale deployments in China.
Uber will provide customer access, bookings, payment and customer service through its mobility platform. Daily fleet operations may be handled by local partners selected for each market, while vehicle ownership and financing models may vary by city or country.
Companies emphasize commercial scale
Sarfraz Maredia, Uber's global head of autonomous mobility and delivery, said the next phase of autonomous transportation would be a shift from individual launches to repeatable commercial scale.
Maredia said the companies aimed to create a model that could expand rapidly across cities by combining Pony.ai's autonomous technology with Uber's platform, local expertise and operational capacity.
James Peng, founder and chief executive of Pony.ai, said the expanded agreement represented a significant new phase in the partnership. Peng said the two companies aimed to establish sustainable commercial operations in Europe and beyond by combining Pony.ai's autonomous driving technology and operational experience with Uber's global mobility platform and market reach.
Background to the collaboration
The collaboration between Uber and Pony.ai began in May 2025 with plans to integrate Pony.ai robotaxis into the Uber platform in international markets.
In 2026, the companies launched a commercial robotaxi service in Zagreb with Croatian mobility company Verne. Verne served as the owner and operator of the fleet for the service.
Pony.ai operates paid, fully driverless robotaxi services in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen.
