The Ukrainian General Staff announced that since Russia's large-scale attack began on February 24, 2022, approximately 1,369,340 soldiers have been lost in Ukraine. According to the institution's assessment dated June 4, 1,300 more soldiers were added to the losses in the last day.
The statement also noted that the Russian army has lost a significant amount of military equipment since the start of the war. Accordingly, 11,978 tanks, 24,676 armored combat vehicles, 102,971 vehicles and fuel tankers, and 43,247 artillery systems were lost.
The list also included 1,830 multiple rocket launchers, 1,403 air defense systems, 436 aircraft, and 353 helicopters. The Ukrainian side reported that 327,726 unmanned aerial vehicles and 1,562 ground robotic systems were also destroyed.
Regarding naval elements, it was stated that 33 warships and boats and two submarines were lost. These figures are part of the updated breakdown regularly shared by Ukraine regarding Russia's total losses on the battlefield.
The Ukrainian General Staff does not disclose figures related to its own losses. The institution attributes this to operational secrecy.
Assessments by independent Western think tanks also highlight the view that Russia's losses significantly exceed those of Ukraine. The Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies estimates the loss ratio roughly at 2.5 to 1 or 2 to 1.
In the center's January 2026 report, it was estimated that Ukraine probably suffered between 500,000 and 600,000 losses between February 2022 and December 2025, of which 100,000 to 140,000 were soldiers killed in action.
