Preparations have begun for the 49th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, which will be held in Istanbul in 2027 under Türkiye's chairmanship.
Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy met with Prof. Dr. M. Öcal Oğuz, Chairperson of the UNESCO Turkish National Commission, to assess preparations for the event. The meeting addressed the main areas of preparation, including transportation, communications, technical infrastructure and side events.
Preparations to be coordinated
Ersoy said the meeting would contribute to strengthening international cooperation on the implementation of the World Heritage Convention and developing new approaches to preserving shared heritage.
Preparations for the meeting are planned to be carried out by experienced professional teams, with all elements of the process coordinated within the same structure. The Türkiye Tourism Promotion and Development Agency is also expected to be involved in the preparations.
The conditions to be communicated by the UNESCO World Heritage Centre will be examined to clarify requirements, while the event's internet infrastructure and other technical arrangements will be prepared and made operational.
Venue and transportation to be planned
In assessments concerning the venue, it was stated that the required halls and meeting spaces could be provided through Istanbul's existing facilities. Cooperation with the relevant institutions is planned for the transportation and movement of participating delegations within the city.
The preparation program envisages fulfilling obligations related to security measures, waste management, environmental precautions, emergency medical and first-aid services, accessibility and access for people with disabilities.
International broadcasting infrastructure to be established
One of the key areas of preparation is selecting a convention center that meets the infrastructure and capacity requirements to be determined by the World Heritage Centre. An internet page, registration system and accreditation system suited to the scale of the international event are also planned for the meeting.
The preparation program also includes establishing international broadcasting infrastructure to enable the sessions to be streamed live. Direct and rapid communication with UNESCO teams is among the steps needed to ensure that the process proceeds without disruption.
Side events and promotional activities
Side events dedicated to World Heritage are planned to be held alongside the committee meeting. These events are expected to give States Parties, UNESCO, advisory bodies, civil society organizations, experts and other organizations the opportunity to present their projects and share their experiences.
In addition to the opening and closing ceremonies, various activities for participants are planned. The World Heritage Young Professionals Forum and the World Heritage Site Managers Forum are also planned to be organized as part of the program.
Türkiye's World Heritage sites to be promoted
The meeting is planned to be used to increase international media interest in Istanbul and promote Türkiye's cultural heritage. In this context, content designed to attract media attention and special events focused on the preservation and promotion of Türkiye's cultural heritage are planned.
A special section on Türkiye's sites inscribed on the World Heritage List is planned for UNESCO's World Heritage magazine. The special issue is expected to be published in English, French and Turkish.
Consideration is also being given to featuring a World Heritage site from Türkiye in the World Heritage Map. The map is planned to be published in English, French and Spanish.
Large task force to be established
Under a study prepared by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism's General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums, a consultation meeting with the relevant institutions and the signing of a protocol on the distribution of responsibilities are envisaged after the World Heritage Centre submits the agreement text and the Statement of Requirements.
The task force to be established for the preparations is planned to include the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Türkiye Tourism Promotion and Development Agency, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Istanbul Governorship, the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, the UNESCO Turkish National Commission and the relevant administrations.
