Tom Barrack, the U.S. special envoy for Syria and Iraq and ambassador to Ankara, said he was "deeply concerned" by Israel’s attack on the abandoned Abu Zuhur military airfield in Syria’s Idlib province.
In a post on X, Barrack said similar attacks led to unnecessary escalation and did not contribute to regional stability.
Barrack calls for diplomatic dialogue
Barrack said the government of Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa had not adopted an aggressive stance and had repeatedly demonstrated its readiness to reduce tensions in its relations with Israel.
Barrack said the United States would continue contributing to the diplomatic process and called on all parties to prioritize "rational dialogue" over further military action.
Eight attacks on Abu Zuhur airfield
The Israeli Air Force had previously carried out eight attacks on Abu Zuhur airfield. A representative of the Syrian authorities said the attacks hit the runway and an abandoned structure in a hangar.
No deaths or injuries were reported in the attack.
