The USA is preparing to send a high-level security delegation to China led by Undersecretary for Defense Policy Elbridge Colby ahead of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's planned visit to China. According to the South China Morning Post, the timing of this visit has not yet been announced, and neither Washington nor Beijing has given official approval. China linked Hegseth's visit to Washington making a clear statement about the status of the $14 billion arms package to Taiwan. According to the Financial Times, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that Beijing's stance against US arms sales to Taiwan is consistent and clear. US President Donald Trump, during his three-day official visit to China last week, discussed trade, bilateral relations, and Taiwan issues with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Hegseth accompanied Trump; this was the first time the US President and Defense Secretary visited China together since the normalization of bilateral relations. Taiwan leader William Lai Ching-te announced he would welcome a meeting with Trump. The arms package includes missile and air defense systems but has been pending at the US State Department for months. China views Taiwan as its own 'separatist region,' and this remains a significant source of tension in relations between Washington and Beijing.
