While teachers protesting with the slogan “We are hungry” in Ankara were detained with their hands cuffed behind their backs, Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin visited the AKP Provincial Headquarters in Bursa. Teachers who came to Ankara in response to the call from the Private Sector Teachers' Union started a hunger strike.
Police intervened harshly against teachers who wanted to make a statement in front of the TBMM Çankaya Gate, and 14 people, including Private Sector Teachers' Union President Eren Edebali and Organization Secretary Hüseyin Aksoy, were detained with their hands cuffed behind their backs. While the teachers continued their hunger strike and were beaten, Minister Yusuf Tekin visited the AKP Bursa Provincial Headquarters.
In his speech there, Tekin boasted about the increase in the number of teachers in Bursa during the AKP period. "In the 2002-2003 academic year, there were a total of 16,568 teachers in Bursa. Currently, there are 42,917 teachers in Bursa. So, the number of teachers has increased approximately 2.5 times. Primary and secondary schools were then considered as primary education schools, and the number of students per teacher in primary education schools was 30.
Currently, it is 19 in primary schools and 14 in secondary schools. This is a very important indicator for us. In the 2002-2003 academic year, a total of 9,488 classes were taught in schools in Bursa. Now, there are 25,407 classrooms. This number excludes ongoing and planned ones. This is truly a significant figure.
The statistical equivalent of this number is that in 2002, in primary education, meaning primary and secondary schools, the average number of students per classroom was 44 in Bursa. This is a very poor figure. It implies the existence of classes with 70, 80, or 90 students. By 2026, this number is expected to be 27 in Bursa. This is indeed a very important figure. In high schools, the number of students per classroom was 39 in 2002, and now it is 22."
