The White House has asked OpenAI to restrict the deployment of its new artificial intelligence model GPT-5.6.
According to CNN, the White House requested that the model be made available only to a limited number of government-approved partners. Sources indicated the move was taken due to the model's advanced capabilities.
An internal memo sent to OpenAI employees, as reported by The Information, stated that the government regulates access to the model on a per-customer basis and that this model would not be favored in the long term.
A White House official said cooperation continues, while OpenAI did not comment on the matter.
The Trump administration imposed similar restrictions on models from Anthropic on June 13, citing national security threats.
