The US-based Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported that the United States told several Gulf countries to prepare for a "short and intense military operation" against Iran after the November 3 midterm elections. In a report citing people briefed on the talks, the newspaper said the messages were delivered through diplomatic and military channels.
According to the newspaper, President Donald Trump has not made a final decision but is leaning toward a "major post-election attack" that could target Iran's infrastructure and nuclear facilities. Potential targets were said to include energy infrastructure, nuclear facilities, and missile and drone capabilities.

According to the WSJ, the US military is moving a Patriot air defense system from Texas to the region, withdrawing troops from bases vulnerable to attack and replenishing its ammunition stocks. An additional carrier strike group and a Marine expeditionary unit are expected to join approximately 20 US warships in the Middle East next month.
The White House declined to comment on "sensitive military plans that may or may not exist" and said Trump was keeping all options on the table to ensure that Iran never acquires nuclear weapons. Trump said at a rally in Lubbock, Texas, on Tuesday, "You will see Iran in a few weeks."
This would mark a new round of conflict: The United States and Israel previously launched a war against Iran on February 28, while Tehran responded with missile and drone attacks on the region, effectively closing the Strait of Hormuz. A memorandum of understanding signed in June did not lead to a final peace because of disputes including navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
