Inspired by her sister Evin Demirhan Yavuz, a world and European champion, Zehra Demirhan began wrestling in 2013 and won the gold medal at the 20th Mediterranean Games.
The 25-year-old national athlete took over the weight class in which her sister had previously competed after Evin suffered an injury. She reached the top at the same event where her sister had also won a championship.
Zehra’s medal journey
Zehra Demirhan won the gold medal in the girls’ 37-kilogram category at the Balkan Championships in 2015. She went on to win European bronze in the youth category in 2016, among juniors in 2021 and in the under-23 category in 2023.
Zehra won a bronze medal at the 2021 World Junior Wrestling Championships and claimed silver after finishing second at the European Under-23 Championships in 2024.
“I felt an extra responsibility”
Zehra Demirhan said she prepared for the competition with her sister’s support and noted that Evin Demirhan had represented the weight class in previous years. Saying that she therefore felt an extra responsibility, Zehra expressed her pride at winning the gold medal.
Zehra said that after winning gold at the Balkan Championships in 2015, she had promised future successes and that she had achieved this goal years later. She said she celebrated her victory on the mat at the Mediterranean Games with the Turkish flag and had the national anthem played.
Zehra Demirhan said she would continue striving to win Turkey’s best medals at European, world and Olympic championships.
Highlighting wrestling’s development in Siirt
Zehra said opportunities were limited when she began wrestling, noting that they had previously trained in small gyms and that new facilities were now being built.
Zehra said her sister had contributed to the development of wrestling in Siirt and expressed her pride at being at the Siirt Evin Demirhan Sports Facility, which bears her sister’s name.
Zehra Demirhan urged young athletes not to give up on their dreams or lose heart during difficult periods.
