Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenskiy announced that he will meet with US President Donald Trump at the G7 summit in France to discuss steps to end Russia's war in Ukraine.
Zelenskiy said the two leaders had a phone call on Sunday during which he updated Trump on developments at the front and explained Ukraine's strengthening position. It was noted that both sides agreed to continue discussions within the G7 framework.
Zelenskiy stated, "We have some good ideas that could help advance peace and save lives."
Trump is expected to join the G7 working session with Zelenskiy on Tuesday. The meeting will take place at a time when US-led peace initiatives have stalled, attention has shifted to tensions in Iran, and the balance on the Ukraine front has changed.
Shortly after Zelenskiy's statement, the Kremlin confirmed a "friendly and candid" phone call between Vladimir Putin and Trump. The Kremlin said the conversation mainly focused on US-Iran negotiations but also addressed Ukraine.
According to the Kremlin, Putin told Trump that Kiev's attacks on Russian territory would not change the course of the war. This message once again reflected Moscow's stance on the military situation on the ground.
Trump has previously expressed his desire to end the war multiple times and even claimed he could resolve it in a single day. He is also known to have pressured Kiev to consider concessions for reconciliation with Moscow following Russia's large-scale offensive launched in 2022.
Ukraine, meanwhile, proposes freezing the conflict along the current front lines as part of a possible peace agreement. With the G7 summit, the diplomatic resolution of the war has once again become a key agenda item for world leaders.
