Students across Germany took to the streets on Friday against a possible return of compulsory military service. Organizers of the “school strike against conscription” said around 45,000 students joined demonstrations in some 100 cities and towns.
Police did not give a nationwide figure but put the turnout in Berlin at about 2,400, while hundreds more marched in Stuttgart, Nuremberg, Munich and Hamburg. Palestinian flags were also seen among the protesters.
Students argue that spending on the Bundeswehr diverts money from education and the social sector, where it is most needed. Many skipped school to take part.
The Military Service Modernization Act, in force since January, requires 18-year-old men to fill out a questionnaire on their willingness and suitability to serve, with mandatory medical exams for men born in 2008 or later due to begin in July 2027. Service remains voluntary, but parliament can activate conscription if recruitment targets are missed or the security situation worsens.
