665th Historical Kırkpınar Oil Wrestling begins at Sarayiçi Er Meydanı
The 665th Historical Kırkpınar Oil Wrestling, held at the Sarayiçi Er Meydanı in Edirne, has begun with the matches of the minik-1 (youngest) category.
The 665th edition of the centuries-old Kırkpınar Oil Wrestling in Edirne kicked off with great excitement at the Sarayiçi Er Meydanı. After the cazgır's salavat (blessing), 41 pehlivans from the minik-1 (youngest) category took to the field and performed the first bouts of the traditional event. Over the three days, competitions in 14 different categories will offer spectators unforgettable moments.
This year, a total of 817 wrestlers will compete, including 40 in the başpehlivan (head wrestler) category. The pehlivans will not only have to take on their opponents but also cope with the high temperatures and humidity in the region. At the Sarayiçi Er Meydanı, which is surrounded by the Tunca River, humidity is expected to exceed 70 percent at some hours. The olive oil applied to the wrestlers' bodies makes the heat feel even more intense, adding to the challenge. According to meteorological data, the temperature is forecast to reach a high of 33 degrees Celsius today, around 31 on Saturday and 32 on Sunday. Scattered showers are also expected to push humidity levels even higher.
Seeding system and match schedule for başpehlivans
Başpehlivan (head wrestler) bouts will begin today at 4:30 PM. In the CW Enerji Oil Wrestling League, the başpehlivans who placed in the top 32 last year were divided into four pots of eight based on their league performances. This year, an additional pot has been introduced, consisting of those who accumulated the highest points in the first three legs of the season. The pehlivans in the first, second and third pots automatically advance to the round of 32, while the wrestlers in the fourth and fifth pots will compete for a spot in the first round. The eight başpehlivans who win these qualifying bouts will earn the right to take part in tomorrow's first-round matches.

- 3. Pot: Serdar Yıldırım, Nedim Gürel, Serhat Gökmen, Hasan Cengiz, Cengizhan Şimşek, Abdulrefik Öner, Mustafa Doğan Özkaya, Faruk Akkoyun.
- 4. Pot: Serhat Balcı, Hamza Köseoğlu, Fatih Atlı, İsmail Balaban, Mustafa Batu, Ertuğrul Dağdeviren, Recep Kara, Hamza Özkaradeniz.
- 5. Pot: Onur Susuz, Süleyman Başar, Tanju Gemici, Serhat Elvan, Hasan Güzeller, Ünal Karaman, Ali Yanatma, Tolga Turan.
